We are extremely humbled and incredibly happy to share that we have been chosen as the curators for the Danish Pavillon for the 20th Architecture biennale taking place in Venice in 2027.

For the first time ever, the curator for the Danish pavillon has been found through an entirely open process, and we would like to pay tribute to the major institutions that have opened themselves up to the possiblity of uncertaintly, new ideas and surprise! Thank you so much to the jury, representing the Danish Architecture Centre, the Danish Arts Foundation, Realdania and the Ministry of Culture. It feels meaningful to us, that this open process has resulted in us being chosen alongside an incredible team, representing not only different fields of expertise, but also a variety of backgrounds and age-groups.

Since its founding in 1980, the biennale has been a place for developing ideas, setting agendas and inspecting current trends within our field. Taking the acute climate crisis as point of departure, we are very eager to unfold a broad experimental process over the coming years, pushing for change towards an socio-ecological approach to architecture.

With inspiration from the majestic forest within which it is situated, Klimaværk is an atmospheric public art piece inhabiting a new urban space in the town of Skørping, Nothern Jutland, DK. Consisting of a series of pieces of alumnium sheets shaped by hand, the installation inhabits a variety of walls, pavements and facades adding a layer of a reflective, fluid space: the installation is responsive to local climate phenomena - catching the sunlight, the movement of the wind and gathering rain water.

Klimaværk, Public Art Installation, Denmark 2024Client: Municipality of Rebild Status: Ongoing, 2024. To be installed spring 2025.Generously supported by the Danish Arts Foundation
Initial sketches and form studies produced at the Danish Art Workshops - February 2024.

The studio has just begun a new project for the transformation of Bramhøjgård - a traditional Danish farm typology into a neighbourhood house of culture.

Køge Nord Skovby is a new large urban development north of the City of Køge, 25 min outside Copenhagen. This development, that will mostly consist of row-houses and single-family units, borders Ølsemagle, a small village consisting of free standing houses and larger farms. Bramhøjgård is situated right in the middle of this double context. The farm and plot it stands on - a historic, park-like garden, was bought by the municipality of Køge- with the demolition of the farm being the most likely outcome for a future development of a neighbourhood house of culture on site.

In 2022, dominique + serena was comissioned to formulate a vision and strategy for the development. We have adopted a strong stance on the historic, architectonic and material value the buildings on site represent, and have proposed a metabolic transformation where all materials are reappropriated, reused and recycled on site. Our project proposes a series of atmospheric rooms, all staged by the aid of climate phenomena: The house is and becomes the resources it uses and produces.
Our proposal made its rounds through meeting rooms of political stakeholders and financing partners. Demolition is off the table, and the project is now fully financed, through contributions from the philantropic organisations Realdania and Lokale & Anlægsfonden.
The project has now entered its detailing phase.

This was a dual assignment: To create a temporary urban space to function under the Skørping byfest (yearly town-party), and test the ideas and layout of the landscape project that is to be realised in 2025.
The installation was realised in close collaboration with locals, who contributed different parts of the installation. Our intervention was a large, central sand pit, that was compiled of materials from the municipal material-yard, where they have returned after the party. The trees were sourced by the municipal maintance guy, who cut them down in wetlands where they are invasive to the natural habitat, and were donated to a local scout-group afterwards to pracitice wood carving.
The furniture was build by locals, to be repurpused in other festivals throughout the year.
As part of the party-programme, we presented the future project through a 1:50 model on site.

Områdefornyelsen Damme-Askeby is an urban renewal project aiming at revitalizing the public space in a small town on the island of Moen in southern Denmark. For the studio this project served as a case study for how to work with age-inclusive public space. The studio experimented with a broad participatory process, including a series of interviews and a workshop at a local nursing home. To realize the potentials brought forward by this process, the studio urged a public/private partnership and a ‘land-swap’ agreement, that allowed for the development of the site that was most important for the social life of the local community, namely a non-descript supermarket parking lot. New spatial arrangments sought to strengthen this mundane sites’ quality as a place for sponeneous social encounters and inter-generational contact. (This work is thoroughly presented in the volume Age-Inclusive Public Space - see ︎).In the design, we have focused on creating opportunities for varying degrees of contact and participation. By designing with polyvalent form the elements suggest rather than dictate use allowing for different interpretations of the same places across ages. Within a limited budget, by using soft stone platforms, local granite, warm sandy tiles, massive oak wood and local flora we have sought to evoke a landscape recognizable from the shallow lagoons and shores of this specific region. “The liveliness and the chance encounters offered by the supermarked entrance, check-out line, and parking lot formed a key meeting point for the local community across ages.” (Age-Inclusive Public Space p. 107)

Reseer Meer is a complex development of houses and landscape situated right on the Rees Lakes, just off the Rhine River.
The project includes a master plan for the entire area as well as development of a range of housing types and public functions. It is our ambition to help the project management make CO2-conscious choices in all development stages.More to come, meanwhile read about it here.

The studio has just begun a new project for an urban renewal in the rural town of Skørping in Northern Jutland.

A Danish version of ‘Twin Peaks’, Skørping is nestled in the midst of one of Denmarks largest forests, Rold Skov - on a hilly moraine landscape.

We will be working on a large central courtyard amidst the towns’ cultural facilities, adjacent paths and the surrounding landscape. The project focuses on the towns identity amidst the forest, age-inclusion and the resources already at hand. This is not a tabula-rasa landscape project, but an editing of what is already there.

	Age-Inclusive Public Space

New public spaces tend to overrepresent attention to the young and middle-aged, whereas elderly citizens are often neglected by contemporary urban design practice.

“Age-Inclusive Public Space” provides inspiration as well as theoretical and practical knowledge on how to design public space to meet the needs of people of all ages. Conceived as a dialogue between practicing architects and contributors from a variety of disciplines, this book combines academic research, architectural case studies, and introduces an age-inclusive design methodology. The drawings, photographs and illustrations of contemporary built environments, historic gardens, art installations and atmospheric landscapes presented here provide a holistic appreciation of the many factes of age-inclusive spatial practice.

The book consists of five parts. Part One presents the ‘elderly’ and concepts concerning Ageing & Public Space. Part Two introduces Elasticity as a way of understanding space in relation to personal change. Parts Three and Four examine spaces of Agency and Belonging. And finally, Part Five focuses on Designing for Agency & Belonging.

The book is designed and typeset to allow for a dynamic exchange of perspectives and thoughts between the editors and the different academic and practicing contributors who are introduced along with references to literature, art and architecture.

The book is composed of different types of content:

Condensed academic articles:

State-of the art researchers communicate their research in dense and thought provoking pieces.

Editors comments and writings: Along the way the editors introduce, comment and write small contributions that navigate the reader through the different themes.

Cases: The book showcases a variety of built environments in a variety of scales that serve as concrete examples and inspiration for practitioners.

Dominique Hauderowicz + Kristian Ly Serena

As young architects concerned with the political and social implications of space, we are particularly interested in public space and the role it can play in the creation of cohesive communities.

In a contemporary society with dominant age-graded institutions, public space is the single most important site for the convergence of people of all ages. Yet it seems this inclusive potential is far from realized.

Looking for inspiration outside our discipline, we have become increasingly interested in academic research on ageing and the environment. However, many of the daily observations we make about street-level developments do not correspond—or are even contradictory—to the theoretical concerns and factual knowledge brought forward by research.

Many scholars we have come to know have tried to reach toward spatial practice from within their own disciplines and been generally successful in influencing legal mechanisms and policy decisions. But there is still a long way to go in influencing how spatial practitioners consider the ageing individual, and so our aspiration with this book is to help improve understanding between academic research and spatial practice as well as to provide an inspirational perspective on space and ageing.
